The Regression Sessions

A Guided Audio-Visual Journey Through the Decades of Their Youth

Regression Sessions

What They Are

Regression Sessions are gentle, immersive audio-visual experiences designed specifically for older adults, individuals living with dementia, and those in residential or supported care settings.

Each session guides participants through the music, sounds and visual atmosphere of the decades in which they grew up, using familiar songs, period imagery, and carefully curated soundscapes to create a sense of recognition, comfort and emotional connection.

These sessions are not performances and they are not clinical interventions.

They are human-centred sensory experiences focused on familiarity, presence and emotional safety.

Why They Matter

For many elderly individuals, particularly those living with dementia or cognitive decline, verbal communication can become difficult or fragmented.

However, emotional and sensory memory often remains deeply intact.

Music, sound and visual cues from earlier life can:

  • unlock memories

  • stimulate emotional recognition

  • reduce agitation and anxiety

  • support mood regulation

  • and create moments of calm, clarity and connection

Regression Sessions are designed to gently meet people where they are, without pressure, expectation or demand.

Sometimes that looks like:

  • a smile

  • a hum

  • a change in posture

  • a moment of stillness

  • or simply a softening of breath

All of these are meaningful outcomes.

How We Deliver Them

Sessions are slow-paced, non-intrusive and fully adaptable to the needs of the individuals present.

We combine:

  • familiar music from earlier decades

  • gentle ambient soundscapes

  • live or recorded acoustic elements

  • period-appropriate visual imagery

  • and carefully paced facilitation

Visuals may include imagery, colour, motion and cultural references from earlier life stages, always selected to be soothing, recognisable and non-overstimulating.

Volume, tempo and intensity are always carefully controlled.

Participants are never required to engage, sing, speak or interact.

Simply being present is enough.

Who They Are For

We work closely with care staff and support teams to ensure each session is:

  • appropriate

  • respectful

  • and aligned with the needs of the individuals in the room

We prioritise:

  • emotional safety

  • dignity

  • consent (verbal or non-verbal)

  • and a calm, grounded presence

Our role is not to “fix” or “treat”, but to hold space and offer gentle sensory support through sound, music and visual memory.

Looking Ahead

Regression Sessions are an evolving strand of our work, and we continue to develop them in response to the needs of the individuals and communities we serve.

Our focus is on:

  • deepening sensory engagement

  • expanding decade-specific content

  • and creating experiences that remain accessible, familiar and emotionally safe

We believe everyone deserves moments of connection, recognition and comfort – regardless of age, ability or cognitive change.
